Melvin Hall, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus at Northern Arizona University.

Tea with Melvin Hall

The first webinar series sponsored by the Analytic Hub took place in the Fall of 2021. "Tea with Melvin Hall" was a 45 minute lunchtime/tea conversation with Dr. Hall, a Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology at Northern Arizona University.

With over a forty plus year career in higher education, Dr. Hall has served on the Committee of Visitors for the National Science Foundation EHR Division including an invited expert panel on the future of evaluation methodology in STEM programs. His other accomplishments include serving as the director of strategic initiatives within the NSF-funded Center for the Advancement of STEM Leadership (CASL) and as an elected member of the AEA Board of Directors

During the 6-week series, Dr.  Hall discussed the benefit of a more expansive conceptual model for investigating student achievement and interventions. The model is based on the work of Egon Brunswick and Cameron Fincher. Our inquiry centered on how to utilize PVEST to target personal student motivational factors (ie risk and protective factors) while at the same time accounting for student interactions and relationships and the institutional characteristics where the interventions take place. We sought a theoretical model from which the Analytic Hub would develop its research plan for the next 4 years. This goal was accomplished.
